CR Minerals SafSil® and Navajo Brand® lines of pumice products are widely used in the paint and coatings industry. The low density and unique particle morphology of the vitreous pumice imparts many desirable properties to the paint formulation.
SafSil® Products
SafSil® products are high performance functional fillers that contain less than 0.1% respirable crystalline silica. SafSil® may be used effectively to replace crystalline silica, nepheline syenite, calcium carbonate, talc, diatomaceous earth, and other extender fillers. Environmentally friendly paints that meet Green Seal Environmental Standard for Paints and Coatings (GS-11) and MPI Green Performance requirements may be formulated using SafSil®. SafSil® may be used in formulations of both latex and solvent-based coatings.

Use in Interior Paints
SafSil® products help provide enhanced qualities in interior paints in properties such as:
- Burnish resistance
- Flatting
- Sheen uniformity
- Touch-up
- Film reinforcement
SafSil® can also replace ceramic microspheres and diatomaceous earth.

Use in Exterior Paints and Stains
SafSil® products provide exterior paints with:
SafSil® products provide exterior paints with:
- Outstanding tint retention
- Acid resistance renders frost free surface
Use in Floor Paints
The hardness, chemical resistance, and abrasive qualities of SafSil® products make them ideal candidates for floor and deck coatings. Pool deck coatings have been successfully formulated with SafSil®.
Use in Primers and Undercoats
SafSil® products are ideal for both architectural and industrial primer applications. SafSil’s® low soluble salt content helps minimize corrosion in maintenance primers. The film texture of paints containing SafSil® CT 450 provides ‘tooth’ for subsequent topcoat adhesion. Primers containing SafSil® CT 450 exhibit very good sanding qualities.
Powder Coatings
SafSil® grades are used successfully in powder coatings. The hardness of
SafSil® is an attribute, and angular sheen control and reinforcement are provided.
Industrial Maintenance Finishes
SafSil® CT 550 has been used successfully by a number of manufacturers to produce quality OEM finishes.
Dry Fall Coatings
Dry fall coatings are another opportunity for use of SafSil®, which provides sheen uniformity and corrosion resistance. The SafSil® also helps retard corrosion.
EIFS Systems
Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) basecoats and topcoats may be improved with the use of SafSil®. In basecoats SafSil® can help bridge large nodular sand grains and enhance reinforcing. SafSil® is an asset for improving tint retention in topcoats.
Tennis Court Coatings
SafSil® products have been successfully formulated in tennis court coatings. SafSil® provides film reinforcement, sheen control, and tint retention, as well as durability.
Traffic Paint
SafSil® Grades are efficacious in traffic paint applications. The hardness of the material makes it ideal in replacing calcium carbonate in these systems. SafSil® CT200 may also replace diatomaceous earth for sheen control in traffic paints. Improved performance will typically occur due to greater free binder.
Driveway Sealers
SafSil® has been used successfully in driveway sealers. The material contributes to ideal rheology and helps film reinforcement.
Heat Coatings
SafSil® has successfully been used in high heat coatings. Because of its vitreous nature, SafSil® can easily withstand temperatures well over 1000 F.
Navajo Brand® Products
The larger particle size Navajo Brand® pumice products are used in non-skid and textured coatings.
