Navajo Brand® Pumice
Navajo Brand® Pumice is a near-white, milled volcanic glass that finds wide use in industrial and cosmetic products.
The Navajo Brand volcanic glass formed when lava from an erupting volcano
flowed onto the earth’s surface and then cooled. The comparatively low atmospheric pressure
at the surface resulted in the sudden release of steam,
and other dissolved gases, from the still molten mass, thus producing
bubbles. This results in the open appearance familiar in “lava rock”
used for gas grill briquettes and landscape rock. Pumice deposits
are only found within a few miles of ancient volcanoes.
CR Minerals Company's pumice deposit is located in Espanola, New
Mexico. Espanola is north of Santa Fe where our processing plant
is located. The ore is mined from open pits, and then transported to the
plant where it is crushed, milled and dried. It is then processed
through a modern classification system to produce the rigorously controlled
and consistently uniform Navajo Brand products.
